About 450 years ago, it was decided that any fish caught in the 13-ri sea area of Katahama, from Irago to Arai-no-Yado on the Tokaido, had to be bought and sold within the grounds of Kumano Gongen Shrine in Toyohashi (Yoshida).
And the shrine flourished as a collection point for an abundance of seafood.
The area around Kumano Gongen Shrine is the neighborhood known today as Uomachi.
Yamasa Chikuwa also started out as a fish wholesaler.
A company with a similar name is Yamasa Kamaboko, headquartered in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture.
Like Yamasa Chikuwa, it manufactures and sells fish paste products, and they also have the same company emblem, but the two companies are completely unrelated.
It is also unrelated to Yamasa Soy Sauce, headquartered in Choshi, Chiba Prefecture.
