Somen nagashi is a summer delicacy in which somen noodles are floated one serving at a time through a tube with running water, and people take turns picking them up.

Nationwide, “nagashi somen” is done in bamboo tubes.
In Kagoshima Prefecture, it is called “somen nagashi” and is rotated like a lazy river pool.

There are about 20 somen nagashi restaurants throughout the prefecture, and the one recommended by locals is Tosenkyo in Ibusuki City.

The Kagoshima style is to eat somen nagashi with sweet soup and wasabi as condiments in a natural environment where you can enjoy the coolness of summer.
Kagoshima residents enjoy somen nagashi as a summer tradition.

It’s also a popular date spot!

There’s even a city-run somen nagashi restaurant.

A story from Taniyama, an employee of Ibusuki City’s Tosenkyo Gorge somen nagashi.

In the 1960s.
Ibusuki City was experiencing a honeymoon boom. The area where Tosenkyo is located, formerly Kaimon Town, had no tourist attractions.

There was clean spring water, so the town office at the time thought it would be a good idea to have somen nagashi (flowing noodles) as a tourist attraction, and started it.

At first, the noodles were poured into a bamboo tube by running water like a river, but due to a shortage of manpower, they took inspiration from Chinese tables and changed to a rotating system in 1963.
And it was a huge hit!
