The history of tea in Shizuoka is long, and tea was cultivated in Shizuoka at least during the Kamakura period.

Shizuoka Prefecture has large rivers such as the Tenryu River, the Oi River, the Abe River, and the Fuji River, and the river basins are suitable for tea production.

Later, Tokugawa Ieyasu prized Shizuoka tea and it was presented to the Edo Shogunate.
His fame grew among Edo’s upper classes and intellectuals.

What’s even more amazing about Shizuoka is that tea is produced throughout the prefecture and consumed throughout the prefecture.
This is thought to be a major reason why tea has taken root in Shizuoka.
