ステーキ<Steak>

Okinawa Prefecture is by far the number one in the nation when it comes to the number of steakhouses (per 100,000 people).

There are many cheap steak restaurants where you can get a steak for around 1,000 yen, and even old-fashioned diners serve authentic steaks.

The most popular cut among Okinawans is lean meat – tenderloin (fillet)

“A1 sauce,” which was previously an essential ingredient for steak, was banned from import last year.

However, the people of Okinawa can now rest easy knowing that the “W1 Sauce” and “S1 Sauce” have been developed, which are almost identical to the original.

Steak has been popular in Okinawa since around 1950, when ”New York Restaurant” opened as a steak restaurant catering to American soldiers.

Kanehide, a famous supermarket in Okinawa, has steak days on the 5th of every month, offering great deals.

A story from Munetaka Hirakawa, former head of the Okinawa Prefectural Central Meat Sanitation Inspection Center

Shortly before Okinawa Prefecture was returned to Japan in 1972, people in Okinawa started eating steak.

Because tariffs were kept low compared to mainland Japan, they could eat steak quite cheaply.

Something that would cost about 5,000 yen in mainland Japan could be eaten for about 2,000 yen.

Around 1969, going out to eat steak was a great pastime.
