Chicken nanban is the soul food of Miyazaki residents. Two famous restaurants, “Ogura” and “Naochan,” are located in the mecca of chicken nanban in Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture.

Miyazaki Prefecture’s Chicken Nanban isn’t just fried chicken!?
The chicken is coated in egg, creating a fluffy batter, and the tartar sauce and Nanban vinegar are quite sweet.
The whole fried chicken is dipped in Nanban vinegar and then generously topped with tartar sauce.
Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is the mecca for chicken nanban.
The two restaurants that hold the key to its history are “Ogura” and “Naochan.”
The long-established Western restaurant “Ogura” was the first to add tartar sauce to a slice of deep-fried chicken breast around 1964, and named it “chicken nanban.”
Ogura-san also has a wide variety of tartar sauces.
Chicken Nanban originated as a staff meal of deep-fried chicken breast dipped in Nanban vinegar.
Founded in 1964, Naochan continues to pass on that same flavor.
Naochan is the home of a high school classmate of former Olympic swimmer Matsuda Takeshi.
